Celebrating Pride Month - Seen Occupation Lately?

Duke OTD students have been exposed to how sexual identities shape and are shaped by occupation. That connection has been the focus of research in Occupational Science for several decades. Here is a sample of research illustrating how the research has developed over time. As with all research, there is much room for expansion. All the articles are available through Duke Libraries.

CAMP Course Serves Community Need

David practiced cooking for himself and learned about making healthier food choices.  Noelle worked on her morning “get ready by myself” routine by eating, brushing her teeth, and doing her hair. Derrick used a slide board to transfer from his wheelchair to a bed. 

OTD Faculty Member Named Climate and Sustainability Teaching Fellow

Denise Nepveux, Ph.D. has been named one of 12 Climate and Sustainability Teaching Fellows. Led by the Nicholas School of the Environment and Duke Learning Innovation, the program supports a peer learning community for faculty and other instructors who are interested in redesigning an existing course to substantively engage with issues of climate and sustainability, to be taught in fall 2023 or spring 2024.

Duke OTD Holds Inaugural Commissioning Ceremony

On May 5, the OTD 2024 inaugural class was commissioned into service as fieldwork and capstone students. Thirty-eight OTD 2024 students were joined by family, friends, faculty, and staff at the Grand Hall of the Trent Semans Center. Students will spend the next year completing two 12-week fieldwork assignments and 14 weeks executing capstone projects. 

OTD Presents Key Topics at May 2 Departmental Research Day

From interacting with visiting professor, Shawn Roll, OTR/L, RMSKS, FAOTA, FAIUM, to poster and podium presentations, the Occupational Therapy Doctorate program infused vital topics into Departmental Research Day conversations.

Emily D’Agostino, DrPH, MS, Med, MA, presented “Feasibility of Going Places: A Park‐based Active Transportation Toolbox to Promote Youth Physical Activity and Access to Healthy Community Spaces.”

Program Receives Pre-Accreditation Status

The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) has granted the Doctorate of Occupational Therapy program Pre-Accreditation status.  In a letter to the department, ACOTE states the program “would appear to meet the 2018 ACOTE Accreditation Standards if fully implemented by the plans.” 

OTD Student Scholarship Showcase Set for May 5

Join us for the Student Scholarship Showcase set for 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, May 5 at the Trent Semens Center, 8 Searle Street, Durham, N.C. 

As many as 50 projects will be on display.  Class of 2024 students will present their capstone project proposals while Class of 2025 students will share the results of their year-long community partner projects. 

Light refreshments will be served.
