Learning by doing is a commitment across most occupational therapy education. At Duke, fieldwork education is integral to the curriculum and is integrated in coursework with direct experiences. Students are provided opportunities to participate in innovative and immersive fieldwork experiences throughout the curriculum. Key stakeholders in fieldwork education include students, fieldwork educators, and the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator. Each stakeholder has a distinct role in fieldwork education and requires a strong collaborative relationship in all fieldwork experiences.
The Academic Fieldwork Coordinator (AFWC) is responsible for managing all aspects of developing, planning, scheduling, and monitoring fieldwork experiences. The AFWC is responsible for ensuring the academic program’s compliance with ACOTE fieldwork education requirements and collaborating with fieldwork educators to ensure that fieldwork experiences meet Duke OTD fieldwork objectives. The AFWC communicates with students and fieldwork educators and provides tools, resources, and strategies in response to student and or/site needs.
