Duke PRIME-PREP Fellowship Selection Process

Our selection process takes a holistic approach, valuing the breadth of an applicant’s experiences, achievements, and potential. We seek candidates whose diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and skills enrich our academic community and contribute meaningfully to science and technology.

Our evaluation considers academic excellence alongside critical attributes such as leadership, problem-solving abilities, and dedication to scientific inquiry. Research experience, creativity, and innovation serve as indicators of readiness to join our program. Additionally, we highly value personal qualities like resilience, adaptability, and collaboration, seeking fellows who thrive in interdisciplinary, dynamic environments.

This holistic approach ensures that our fellows are well-rounded, socially conscious, and prepared to make a significant impact in both their fields and society.


Evaluation Process

Duke faculty members will assess each application based on the following criteria, ranking candidates according to their potential for success. The highest scoring applicants according to

these criteria will be offered an interview. Final selections are made by program directors. Fellows accepted to PRIME-PREP will demonstrate excellence across the following criteria:

Academic Performance

Candidates demonstrate academic excellence by completing a high number of challenging science and science-related courses with predominantly high grades and a few average grades.

Curiosity and Drive for Science (Personal Statement) 

Candidates show strong evidence of persistence and motivation in a specific field of science. Personal experiences that demonstrate excitement, direction, and achievement in science are advantageous. Candidates expressing a strong interest in science, even if lacking a defined focus, will also be considered.

Research Experience 

Competitive applicants will have completed significant academic or professional research, such as internships or independent projects. Successful candidates will bring skills and experience that will contribute substantially to the program.

Letters of Recommendation 

Strong recommendations highlight the applicant’s research potential, motivation, initiative, teamwork, and positive contributions. Strong letters will note that the applicant is among the top of their peer group and instill confidence in their ability to thrive in PRIME-PREP.

Extracurricular Activities and Leadership 

Demonstrated leadership and long-term commitment to organizations, particularly in formal leadership roles, are highly valued. Candidates who show deep involvement and potential to develop leadership skills, even without formal roles, are also encouraged to apply. We especially value candidates with potential to make an impact at Duke and beyond.

Commitment to Goals and Overcoming Challenges 

Strong candidates show dedication to scientific goals and resilience in overcoming obstacles, even if conventional metrics do not fully capture their potential. Candidates will convey a strong commitment to pursuing a PhD.
