DOCR Core Service Center (Research at Pickett)

Welcome to the Duke Office of Clinical Research Core Service Center (DOCR Core).  This service center was established to provide services to Duke investigators who need personnel, space or other services required to carry out clinical research.  

Our mission is to support high-quality clinical research at Duke by providing a comfortable and accessible research space, and an efficient, diverse, and inclusive research team.

An agreement must be in place prior to scheduling appointments or utilizing DOCR service center personnel. 

Core Services

Service What's Included
Coordinator Services

Performs all aspects of study conduct, including regulatory startup, IRB submission, consenting, and protocol-required procedures (e.g., ECG, vital signs, phlebotomy). The team also handles EDC data entry, query resolution, liaison with monitors, investigational product (IP) administration, randomization, and more. We can deliver full-service support or a single visit component (e.g., ECG collection or sample handling). Participants can be seen at any Duke location and, with prior approval, through home-health visits.

Laboratory Services Processes and ships biological samples and conducts CLIA-waived point-of-care (POC) testing such as pregnancy tests.
Recruitment Services Consults on and executes recruitment plans; develops telephone scripts, email blasts, and other outreach materials; and can contact prospective participants as requested.
Provider Services Conducts physical exams, adverse-event assessments, dosing observation, and other procedures that require delegated medical oversight.
Spanish Interpretation & Translation Services Translates documents between English and Spanish and provides in-person or virtual interpretation to facilitate communication between English- and Spanish-speaking individuals.

Overview:
Pickett is a 22,000 square foot outpatient clinical research facility equipped for flexibility, speed, and participant convenience. With 30 exam rooms and a full suite of monitoring and laboratory capabilities, Pickett supports a broad range of adult and pediatric research.

Facility Features:

30 exam rooms across 4 clinic units

8 HEPA-filtered rooms for acutely infectious research

Dedicated rooms with phlebotomy chairs and infusion stretchers

Drive-through participant entrance and free parking

Flexible team meeting and monitor space

Large community event room

Vital signs monitors, ECG, infusion pumps

AED, suction, oxygen, glucometers

Masks, gloves, IV supplies

 

Compact clinical lab featuring a biosafety cabinet, central workstation with computer, white cabinetry, bench-top instruments, and natural light from two windows.

Laboratory Services:

On-site BSL2+ lab with biological safety cabinet

-80°C & -20°C freezers, refrigerator, centrifuges

GCLP-compliant and 21 CFR Part 11 validated

DUHS Clinical Lab & LabCorp drop boxes available

Optional processing by SSCRS lab

Community Room and Lobby:

Welcoming and flexible environment

Community Partnerships

In June 2021, Dr. Susanna Naggie, Vice Dean for Clinical Research, and a team of Duke research leaders were awarded a 2.6 million dollar Duke Endowment grant to establish a community-engaged research hub at the Duke Research at Pickett site.
