The Duke University School of Medicine has a strong tradition of genomic discoveries. The Precision Genomics Collaboratory brings together all of the units in Duke focused on genomics research to create a multi-disciplinary community able to tackle challenges in the ever-evolving genomics landscape.

Acute perioperative alterations in metabolism: A pilot study using mass spectrometry–based metabolomics

Keri Seymour, Allison Ashley Koch, Olga Ilkayeva, Shelley Hwang, James Bain, and other Duke researchers investigated elective surgery's added stress on the human body. They employed metabolomics to define acute, perioperative metabolic changes in the plasma and urine of patients undergoing elective surgery and concluded that attention to perioperative nutrition and intraoperative control of gut-microbial toxins could lead to better postoperative outcomes.
