Covert wins 2024 Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research Awards
Lauren Covert, MD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Duke University School of Medicine, received a 2024 Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research Award. Covert will receive $100,000 a year for the next three years for her project, “Bioengineered Human Muscle as a Platform for Drug Discovery and a Cure for Juvenile Dermatomyositis."
Empowering Communities: Duke Medical Students Lead Cancer Awareness Training with El Centro Hispano
On May 7, two Duke medical students partnered with a faculty member from the Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences to support a pilot initiative called LIDERES (Latino Initiative for Delivering Education and Raising Engagement on Screening for Head & Neck Cancer). The students led a two-hour workshop in Spanish focused on head and neck cancer awareness and early detection techniques.

Durham Neuro Camp: Transforming Lives Through Service Learning
Accessing rehabilitation services can be a significant challenge for individuals with neurological injuries. Insurance limitations, transportation barriers, and socioeconomic disparities often prevent people from receiving the continued care necessary for optimal recovery. Durham Neuro Camp, led by the Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program, is bridging this gap through a no-cost, community-based neurorehabilitation program designed to empower participants and promote health equity.
