A Meeting Of Nobel Minds

Thomas R. Cech, PhD, director of the BioFrontiers Institute at the University of Colorado Boulder, delivered the Paul L. Modrich, PhD, Distinguished Lecture on Friday at the Bryan Research Building to a packed auditorium of faculty and staff. The topic: “Shedding Some light on the Dark Matter of the Genomic Universe.” 

Medical Student Receives Grant

Amanda Farrell, Duke 2nd-year medical student, has been selected as an inaugural recipient of the Grant for Emerging Researcher/Clinician Mentorship (G.E.R.M.) Program award by the Infection Diseases Society of America for zoonotic disease research in Vietnam. G.E.R.M. was developed to provide grants to medical students to support a longitudinal mentored clinical learning and/or research project for up to a year, on infectious diseases-related topics including HIV under the mentorship of an IDSA or HIVMA member. 

Re-Imagining Rural Health Care: Unique Partnership Provides Immersive Training Opportunity for Duke Physician Assistant Students

It’s a four-hour drive west across the state of North Carolina from Durham to Bakersville, a small town in Mitchell County. Most of the drive is on Interstate 40, but the last hour is entirely different. It begins with a sharp turn onto N.C. Highway 226. From there, the country road ambles through rugged communities of farmhouses, antique shops and old drug stores before snaking up the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, switchbacking every 100 feet or so. A look out the window is breathtaking, as the sheer drop-offs are just inches from the road.

Kanakry Named Lasker Clinical Research Scholar for 2018

Christopher Kanakry, MD’07, an investigator at the National Cancer Institute, has been named a 2018 Lasker Clinical Research Scholar. His research at the institute’s Experimental Transplantation and Immunology Branch of the Center for Cancer Research focuses on developing safer and more effective transplantation treatments for patients with advanced malignant and non-malignant hematologic diseases. Kanakry is one of eight clinician-scientists from four institutions this year to receive recognition as Lasker Clinical Research Scholars.

Congratulations to the 2019 Spring AΩA Inductees

Twice a year the Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA​) Medical Honor Society elects a small number of new members.  The criteria include scholastic achievement, leadership capabilities, ethical standards, fairness in dealing with colleagues, demonstrated professionalism, achievement and/or potential for achievement in medicine, and a record of service to the school and community at large. Membership in AΩA​​ is a distinction that accompanies a physician throughout his or her career. 

Soderling Named Chair of Department of Cell Biology

Scott Soderling, PhD, has been named chair of the Department of Cell Biology, effective immediately. Dr. Soderling was named interim chair in December 2018. He succeeds Brigid Hogan, PhD, who served as chair of the Department for 16 years. Dr. Soderling is a professor of Cell Biology and Neurobiology. He also serves as director of the Transgenic Mouse Facility. He previously served as vice chair and director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Cell Biology.
