Bringing a New Vision for Occupational Therapy Education to Duke

When the job announcement first popped up in Barb Hooper’s email inbox, she didn’t bother to open it. She was an associate professor at Colorado State, and as director of the Center for Occupational Therapy Education her focus was on the educational component of occupational therapy. The email announcement was for a position to develop a new occupational therapy program at Duke, and Hooper presumed she wouldn’t be quite what they were looking for.

Medical Student-led Initiative Plants Change for Environmental Justice in Durham

Residents of Durham’s Hayti community, one of the oldest Black communities in the city, will enjoy a flourishing array of blooming trees along their sidewalks this spring thanks to a joint effort by community members, the City of Durham, local nonprofits, and Duke. Nearly 100 trees were recently planted in southeastern Durham with the goal of protecting the community against the negative health impacts of climate change.

Duke Clinical Research Institute's 25 Years of Vision

Twenty-five years ago, Robert Califf, MD, founded the Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) with a mission to usher in a new approach to generating knowledge about health and illness, and to use that knowledge to improve health care. In marking the institute’s 25th anniversary, the five people who have directed the DCRI —from Califf to current executive director Adrian Hernandez, MD, MHS — reflect on how the DCRI has embraced and expanded that vision ever since.

Dissecting Disparities in Cancer Outcomes

When Tomi Akinyemiju, PhD, came from Nigeria to the United States — Michigan, to be precise — for college in 2001, the first thing she realized was that she had drastically underestimated the cold. “It was the first snowstorm of the winter,” she said. “I arrived in Michigan wearing a cute little hoodie, thinking I was all bundled up.” Her brother, who had been living in the state for a while, brought her a winter jacket.
