Duke AHEC Programs and Events

Promoting Pathways Through Programming!

Our programs emphasize engaging and hands-on experiences to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals. We believe that exposure to real-world applications and mentorship from industry professionals is crucial for student success.

NC Pathways Summit: Exploring Career Pathways Impacting Maternal Health: A collaborative effort between Duke AHEC, the City of Medicine Academy (CMA), NC AHEC, and maternal health stakeholders from NCDHHS and Southern Regional AHEC (SR AHEC). The summit features interactive activities designed to educate students about maternal health careers.

  • Helping Students Understand the Medical Profession (HUMP Day): Duke AHEC actively participates in HUMP Day, an event organized by the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and SR AHEC. This program introduces high school students with an interest in math and science to various healthcare professions, fostering enthusiasm and knowledge about career opportunities in medicine.
  • Chapel Hill and Carrboro Middle Schools: Culbreth, McDougle, Phillips, Smith
  • Foundations of Nursing Program: In partnership with the CMA, Duke AHEC is launching the 4th Cohort of the Certified Nursing Assistant Program for high school students. This initiative addresses workforce gaps in nursing through targeted education and certification pathways.
  • Pharmacy and Ophthalmology Tech Pathways: Preliminary meetings have been held with the Duke Pharmacy Tech Program and Duke Ophthalmology Tech Program to explore potential pathways from CMA into these fields.

Duke AHEC is dedicated to establishing additional partnerships with SR AHEC to enhance HUMP Day 2025 offerings, including expanding participation to students from Cumberland, Sampson, Bladen, Harnett, and other counties. We are also excited to bring students from Durham County to participate in these valuable experiences.
