The Health Careers and Workforce Diversity program provides health career awareness and enrichment programs for Durham County middle and high school students, with a focus on underrepresented minorities, and economically or educationally disadvantaged populations. One goal of the program is to provide students with knowledge that racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity is an important aspect of the health care workforce as it affects the way providers interact and connect with patients. A second goal is to support students academically and expose them to the knowledge and skills needed to train for and work in health care.

Recognizing that we need to start with career preparation early, the Duke AHEC Health Careers program offers health career and exposure opportunities; job shadowing opportunities; and college readiness activities, such as ACT/SAT prep courses or college tours, to middle and high school students. We are able to offer our programs through collaboration from our academic and community partners, which includes: Duke University School of Medicine, Duke University School of Nursing, Durham Public Schools, and providers & staff at Duke University Hospital.
