Glioblastoma brain tumors can have an unusual effect on the body’s immune system, often causing a dramatic drop in the number of circulating T-cells that help drive the body’s defenses.
Where the T-cells go has been unclear, even as immunotherapies are increasingly employed to stimulate the body’s natural ability to fight invasive tumors.
Colin Duckett Named Vice Dean for Basic Science for School of Medicine
Colin S. Duckett, PhD, chief scientific officer of the Baylor Scott & White Research Institute and professor in the Department of Medicine in the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, has been named the new vice dean for basic science for the Duke University School of Medicine, it was announced today by Mary E. Klotman, MD, Dean, Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Duckett will begin his service as vice dean on September 4, 2018.

Handling the new human subjects information in NIH progress reports
In June, NIH switched to their new Human Subjects System (HSS) for reporting progress with clinical trials and human subjects studies. In recent weeks, some folks preparing their Research Performance Progress Reports, or RPPRs, struggled to find instructions of how to apply the new system to their research updates.
NIH Human Subjects Changes + Congress = Interim Policy Flexibilities for Basic Research
As you may have seen, NIH released a notice last week regarding “FORMS-E” and related human subjects policies. I expect this notice, "Delayed Enforcement and Short-Term Flexibilities for Some Requirements Affecting Prospective Basic Science Studies Involving Human Participants", will be the first of many responses to Congressional concerns about the NIH application requirements for clinical trials (see the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2018, Public Law 115-141).
