Duke Medical Student Alex Villeda awarded Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarship

Duke University medical student Alex Villeda has been awarded the 2019 Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarship by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)  recognizing  outstanding students entering their third year of medical school who have shown leadership efforts to eliminate inequities in medical education and health care. Recipients receive a $5,000 scholarship check and a crystal award.

Villeda will be recognized and will accept his award at the AAMC annual meeting in Phoenix Arizona in November.

“Alex is so deserving of this recognition and award,” said Leonor Corsino, MD, associate professor in the Department of Medicine and faculty advisory for Duke’s Latino Medical Student Association. “Alex is a leader in our local community and school. He developed and successfully implemented Scholar Academy for Latinxs United for Diversity (SALUD) and is a leader of our LMSA chapter. Alex is passionate about helping others and serving as a voice for our students and the local LatinX community.”
