Emily M. D'Agostino, DPH, MS, MEd, MA, Director of Community-Engaged Research Practice; Assistant Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery, discussed her recent study examining the impact of asthma on children’s physical activity levels with MedPage Today. Severe, persistent asthma in children is linked to decreased physical activity, which may, in turn, lead to poor physical fitness. Longitudinal research assessing asthma severity as a predictor of physical fitness is limited among the pediatric population.

This collaborative study titled Hip-focused Physical Therapy (PT) versus Spine-Focused Physical Therapy for Older Adults with Chronic Low Back Pain at Risk for Mobility Decline (MASH): a Multicenter, Single-Masked, Randomized Controlled Trial was published in The Lancet: Rheumatology, an internationally leading journal for musculoskeletal research.

Unlocking Genomic Potential: Highlights from Genomics Scientific Retreat

The Duke School of Medicine Precision Genomics Collaboratory (PGC) held the third annual Genomics Scientific Retreat on December 8 in the Trent Semans Center Great Hall. The event showcased two keynote speakers; 13 short talks and over 20 posters from trainees, research staff, and junior faculty; talks from previous PGC pilot grant winners, and chances to network with others interested in genomic research.

Duke Occupational Therapy Doctorate Gains ACOTE Accreditation 

It’s official! Duke University’s Occupational Therapy Doctoral Program has been granted accreditation from the Accreditation Council of Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) for seven years.  Duke OTD joins 90 other programs accredited to award a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy and 483 programs awarding OT degrees at the associate, bachelor, master, doctorate levels. 

ON THE SCENE WITH THE ASSOCIATE DEAN: BIOTRAIN 720, Fall 2023

As 2023 ends, I want to acknowledge all those involved in Fall’s BIOTRAIN 720 (Scientific Grant Writing) for which I am a co-course director. This was the 13th year for the course that was started by Doug Marchuk many years ago now as a small class for MGM and UPGG students. Over the years, the course has grown considerably due to demand.
