MEDx Reflects: Exploring the Medicine and Engineering Intersection with Dean Mary Klotman

In 2015, the School of Medicine and Pratt School of Engineering, with support from the Office of the Provost, created MEDx. An initiative rather than an institute, MEDx is structured to enhance existing ties and encourage new collaborations among faculty from both schools as well as other schools, institutes and initiatives at Duke. This MEDx article is part of a series that highlights key leaders in medicine and their thoughts on the intersection of medicine and engineering.

Congratulations Duke Clinical Leadership Program Graduates

Congratulations to the 24 School of Medicine and Duke Health faculty who graduated from the 2019 Duke Clinical Leadership Program (DCLP) last week! DCLP was founded by the Chancellor for Health Affairs in 2010 to help expand leadership capacity within Duke Health.

Sullivan Named Associate Dean for Research Training

Beth Sullivan, PhD, Associate Professor of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, has been named Associate Dean for Research Training for the Duke University School of Medicine, effective July 1, 2019.

Researchers Identify Enzyme That Suppresses Immune System in Breast Cancer

Immunotherapies have transformed cancer care, but their successes have been limited for reasons that are both complex and perplexing.   In breast cancer especially, only a small number of patients are even eligible to undergo treatment with immunotherapies, and most see little benefit.   But in a pre-clinical study led by the Duke Cancer Institute, researchers outlined a potential way to improve those results by uncloaking breast cancer tumors to the body’s immune system.   

Division of Head & Neck Elevated to Department Status

The Division of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences within the Department of Surgery will be elevated to department status, effective July 1, 2019. The Duke University Health System Board of Directors approved the upgrade resolution on June 14, 2019. The upgrade proposal was approved by the Duke University Board of Trustees in May. Elevation from division to department signals the growth and independence of the division. Department status can enhance awareness and recognition nationally and can also aid in the ability to recruit faculty in the specialty. Dr.

James Wyngaarden, former chair of Medicine and NIH director, has died

James B. Wyngaarden, MD, professor emeritus and former chair of the Duke Department of Medicine as well as former director of the National Institutes of Health, died on June 14 at the age of 94. Dr. Wyngaarden was a towering figure in medicine and an exceptional leader at Duke. He was an internationally recognized authority on the regulation of purine biosynthesis and the genetics of gout and a nationally respected advocate for the role of physician-scientists in clinical investigations.
