Teoma LaShawn is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and ordained Baptist Minister passionate about community engagement and health promotion as it relates to decreasing the effects of health inequities and disparities.
This passion led her to found BodySoul Community Wellness and Physical Therapy, Inc. in Oakland, CA, a physical therapy and health promotion practice that combines her vocations. Dr. LaShawn’s work engages individuals and communities at the intersection of faith and health, reaching people where they worship and gather in the community. She created of The Renewal Series, a forum designed to address and explore mental health and well-being, and The Health Empowerment Series, a series of monthly health empowerment sessions provided by physical therapists to faith and community-based organizations.
Dr. LaShawn has been practicing physical therapy for 15 years. In her clinical practice, she practices in outpatient orthopaedics and enjoys working with athletes.
She received a Master of Physical Therapy degree from Howard University, a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Alabama State University, and a Master of Divinity degree from Candler School of Theology at Emory University with a certification in Faith and Health. Dr. LaShawn was selected as an APTA Centennial Scholar in 2021 and served as a California delegate to the APTA in 2022 and 2023.
A few fun facts about Dr. LaShawn: her smile is infectious; she is originally from San Francisco; she has a twin sister (Tatiana Taylor) and they are both former college basketball players; she's affectionately known by her nieces and nephews as “Auntie Tee!”
