School Names New Assistant Dean for Basic Science Education

Matthew Velkey, PhD, will assume the role of Assistant Dean for Basic Science Education in the Duke University School of Medicine on July 1, 2014, replacing Jeff Dawson, PhD, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Immunology and the current Assistant Dean for Basic Science Education. Dr. Dawson has been an integral participant in the medical student education program for many years and has served as the course director for the immunology portion of the program. Since the curriculum was revised in 2004, he has served as the Assistant Dean.. Dr. Velkey has been a very important member of the School’s basic science education team, assisting with all facets of the curriculum. Aside from the student themselves, no faculty member has a better understanding of this curriculum than he does.
