After a national search, Matthew D. Barber, MD, MHS, has been appointed to serve as president of the Duke Health Integrated Practice (DHIP) and vice dean for Clinical Affairs in the Duke University School of Medicine, effective immediately.
Barber has served as interim senior vice president of DHIP since July 1, 2024, and has brought a clear vision, passionate support and strategic alignment to the critical work done by departments, community practices, faculty, and staff. During his time as DHIP’s interim leader, he has been instrumental in enhancing collaboration across Duke Health and building an infrastructure that supports the future growth of Duke Health.
As president and vice dean, Barber will oversee practice operations, strategy development and implementation throughout DHIP.
“Matt will continue to support our team as they deliver remarkable patient care, while fostering a clinical culture of exceptional physician and team member well-being, so that DHIP is an organization where people thrive and we can continue to recruit and retain the very best,” said Thomas A. Owens, MD, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Duke University Health System, and Mary E. Klotman, MD, executive vice president for health affairs for Duke University, dean of the School of Medicine, and chief academic officer for Duke Health, in an announcement.
Working within the DUHS and SOM leadership team, Barber will play a critical role in further integration of Duke’s academic and clinical missions. He will maintain his role as an executive sponsor for the organizational culture work to be “Better Together.”
He has served as the chair of the School of Medicine's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 2017, and under his leadership the department has flourished, growing and strengthening each of its missions.
Owens and Klotman thanked those who have supported the department during the interim period, notably Brenna L. Hughes, MD, MSc, who has served as executive vice chair for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, overseeing and coordinating departmental operational and strategic activities during this time. She has agreed to continue her service as interim chair of the department.
