Hundreds of faculty, trainees, students, and staff attended the School of Medicine’s inaugural Research Week, held October 14-17, 2019. The week-long event included lectures, a poster session, Innovation Jam sponsored by the Duke Institute for Health Innovation, and a Town Hall hosted by the Office of Scientific Integrity.
Dean Mary E. Klotman, MD, kicked off Research Week on Monday, which featured lectures by Duke faculty members Shelley Hwang, MD, MPH, Mary and Deryl Hart Professor of Surgery, and Lawrence David, PhD, assistant professor of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology.
On Tuesday, Karl Deisseroth, MD, PhD, D. H. Chen Professor, Professor of Bioengineering and of Psychiatry and of Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, delivered the Robert J. Lefkowitz, MD, Distinguished Lecture, speaking about the “Inner Working of Brains and Channelrhodopsins.”
Dr. Hernandez with Dr. Richard Lifton, the clinical keynote speakerOn Wednesday, attendees heard lectures from Duke faculty members Chris Woods, MD, professor of medicine, and Svati Shah, MD, MHS, associate dean and director of the Duke Precision Genomics Collaboratory.
The week culminated on Thursday with Innovation Jam, a poster session, and a clinical keynote address “From Genes and Genomes to Biology and Health” by Richard Lifton, MD, PhD, president of The Rockefeller University.
During Innovation Jam, groups of faculty members and students gave timed presentations to investors about their most innovative healthcare ideas—including devices, diagnostics, and digital therapeutics— that could have immediate application at Duke or commercialization elsewhere.
Fifty graduate students, clinical trainees, and medical students presented research posters during the poster session.
