John Sampson, MD, PhD, will be chair of the new Department of Neurosurgery. In February, the Duke University Board of Trustees approved the creation of a Department of Neurosurgery within the School of Medicine. The current Division of Neurosurgery, within the School’s Department of Surgery, will be elevated to department status, effective July 1, 2015. Dr. Sampson has served as chief of the Division of Neurosurgery since February 2014.
Dr. Sampson is the Robert H. and Gloria Wilkins Distinguished Professor of Surgery. He joined the Division of Neurosurgery in 1998 after completing his training at Duke. He also has received a PhD in Neuropathology at the Duke Graduate School and an MBA at the Duke Fuqua School of Business. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Sampson is highly regarded for his innovative research in drug delivery to the brain and immunotherapy for brain tumors.
