Members of the Class of 2023 were hooded Saturday, May 13, earning their doctorates in a special ceremony held at the Washington Duke Inn.  It marked the 79th class to graduate from the Duke physical therapy program.

“As you celebrate your accomplishments today, think about how now you are now part of the Duke DPT legacy, “ said Division Chief Todd Cade. “Not many programs have as rich of a history and legacy as we do.”

School of Medicine Dean Mary E. Klotman, MD, told the graduates told the class how every individual’s journey through medical education is unique, and that every class faces circumstances and challenges.

“Even by those standards, though, you have been through some unusual times,” referring to the years the class preserved through the COVID-19 pandemic. “We call this resilience: the ability to adapt, shift gears and find new ways to achieve your goals in the face of adversity, trauma, and stress. It is an essential quality for any successful healthcare professional.

“ Your path was not easy, and it came with sacrifice and difficulty. But you did it,” said Klotman.

Dr. Klotman congratulated the graduates, saying that “as physical therapists, you will be integral and critical healthcare team members that will significantly impact patients’ lives together. “
