The SOM Academic New Faculty Orientation (NFO) series continued on 12/14/22 with “Departmental Culture, Secondary Affiliations”. (Pathway: basic scientists in a basic or clinical department).

Participating leadership shared their experiences and about ways to support new and junior faculty, including placing a high priority on setting an inclusive culture within their departments in the basic sciences. Every department is different, and thoughtful consideration is needed to make meaningful, positive impact, whether on a broad department level or within the culture of a lab or team. Participants shared their experience in pursuing secondary affiliations, including the motivation behind those pursuits and the expectations and benefits of the affiliation.

This roundtable discussion featured insight from Raphael Valdivia, PhD (Chair of Immunology), Lesley Curtis, PhD (Chair of Population Health Sciences), Collen Wu (Assistant Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery and Assistant Research Professor in Cell Biology and Pharmacology and Cancer Biology). The discussion was moderated by Colin Duckett, PhD (Vice Dean for Basic Science).
