I have definitely met some life-long friends in this program. I have new skills I didn’t have a year ago involving data visualization, strategic thinking, HIT, etc. Healthcare revenue cycle is ripe for disruption due things like changing payment models, price transparency, value-based healthcare – and because of Duke MMCi, I am ahead of the curve.
With the healthcare industry constantly changing, Monica Card, a Revenue Cycle Manager for Duke University Health System, knew there was a need to advance her existing knowledge in the areas of business and IT. As she searched for a ways for continuing education, she found a program focused on professionals that would perfectly fit what she needed; Duke University Master of Management in Clinical Informatics (MMCi). She knew this was the program for her. “And what better place to learn about Clinical Informatics than Duke!”
In the past year, Monica has grown exponentially. The MMCi Boot Camp, a 4-day long prep course, where over fifteen industry leaders speak about the impact of clinical information in their respective business enterprises. This ensures every MMCi student, regardless of employment background, has the same footing and starting point to enhance their educational experience. Through this, Monica gained a new way of thinking about healthcare solutions.
Monica stated, “Clinical informatics promotes the understanding, integration, and application of information technology in healthcare settings. This helps to ensure adequate and qualified support of clinician objectives and industry best practices. Duke MMCi is positioning doctors, IT professionals, nurses and business leaders to be armed with the necessary information to lead this new burgeoning business paradigm. ”
As the year-long program came to a close last August, Monica takes with her a new set of skills, geared towards health IT, data visualization, and strategic thinking. As she continues to grow, the knowledge she gained from the program propelled her “ahead of the curve,” when it comes to shifting payment models, price transparency, and the shift to value-based care.
Monica knows the healthcare industry is one of the last industries to get ‘disrupted’ by new platforms such as, Uber Health Transport, technological advances and new types of competitors like Amazon. Duke MMCi is positioning doctors, IT professionals, nurses and business leaders to be armed with the necessary information to lead this new burgeoning business paradigm.
Asked if she has changed now that she is armed with MMCi knowledge, she stated, “I have changed tremendously! I look at problems differently – solutions are more numerous – my research ability has expanded.” The program is not just classwork, here are some other benefits:
