Brittany Macon-Davis, DMSc, MHS, PA-C, joined the faculty of the Duke Physician Assistant Program on March 1, 2023. She earned her Master of Health Science in Physician Assistant Studies from the Duke PA Program in 2015 and her Doctor of Medical Science from the University of Lynchburg in 2019. She also completed the Advanced Practice Fellowship Program in Hospital Medicine at Atrium Health in Charlotte, NC in 2016.

Why did you choose to join the faculty in the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health?

The Department of Family Medicine & Community Health is my home. This is where I grew up. As a student here, I felt that I had a team wanting me to be successful. Now coming back, I feel the sentiment even stronger. The Department of Physician Assistant Studies invests in their stakeholders. This department continuously offers an immense amount of opportunities to grow and develop. Your journey is what you make it and that is what leadership wants for you. Furthermore, the team is not okay with the status quo. Medicine is always changing. People are always changing and we have to adapt. This team of hardworking individuals are always trying to improve in every aspect, and that amazes me. Here within the department, they are striving for excellence within Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; teaching; and PA education. The team encourages not only faculty and staff but students as well to make a difference beyond Duke's campus. I want to be a part of that.

Where were you working previous to Duke? What was your role there?

Previously, I was an Assistant Professor at High Point University Physician Assistant Program where I was the course director for the Pharmacology Course during the didactic year. In addition to being the course director for pharmacology, I functioned as the lab instructor for the History and Physical course. In addition to my faculty responsibilities, I was the chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee, Faculty advisor for the High Point University Pre-PA Organization, and was committee member of the Congdon School of Health Sciences Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and High Point University Department of Physician Assistant Studies Admissions Committee. Clinically, I was practicing with the Inpatient Solid Tumor Team at Levine Cancer Institute and Carolina Digestive Health Associates. Prior to academia, I was working at Levine Cancer Institute as the Lead Inpatient Solid Tumor Advanced Practice Provider providing coverage at Carolinas Medical Center and Atrium Health Mercy Hospital.

What is your approach to mentorship/teaching?

My goal in teaching is to help students understand the why behind their decisions and thought processes. If you understand the why, then you will be able to think critically in any space you find yourself in. This is the key to a successful provider. I recognize that every learner has their own approach in how they tackle problems and absorb new information and I love the fact that I can be creative in helping individuals learn and grasp new information in a fast pace environment. While at High Point, I was able to create hands on experiences for students to learn and apply a variety of therapeutics and I hope to bring those skills here to Duke University. Lastly, I teach by setting an example. If I want students to become confident, compassionate, self - aware leaders in health care, then I, too, must exhibit those same qualities.

What will you be teaching/what types of learners will you be working with?

I will be teaching and helping with coordination of classes within the pre-clinical and clinical years. I will mainly be teaching in Pharmacology I, II, and III. In addition to Pharmacology, I will be facilitating and helping to coordinate the Patient Assessment & Counseling course, Practice & the Health System course, and Clinical Medicine.

What are your research interests?

My research interests include implementing practical learning strategies for the adult learner and developing efficient and effective care models for oncologic patients.
