Inspiring Students to Consider Occupational Therapy

On July 7, Duke OTD hosted its annual OT Summer Discovery Day, a virtual event designed to introduce participants to the dynamic field of occupational therapy. More than 50 attendees from across the globe joined morning and afternoon sessions led by current students, faculty, and practitioners.

A collaboration between the admissions team and faculty from OTD 516, Teaching, Learning, and Change, the event allowed first-year students to teach topics such as “What do we mean by occupation?” and explore specialty areas like low vision and mental health. As student Tia Clark reflected, “It was a full-circle moment for me, because I was a Summer Discovery Day attendee two years ago.”

Thanks to strong outreach—including social media promotion—the event successfully connected prospective students with the Duke OTD community.

Student Makayla Broughman shared, “We helped participants connect meaningful occupations to their mental and physical health, social connection, and identity. It was powerful to see how well they engaged.”

The program also featured a faculty and practitioner panel, offering attendees a glimpse into diverse career paths in OT. One participant noted, “Hearing from people at all stages—from students to professors—was a highlight.”

Admissions Director Gair McCullough, MAT, MACP, emphasized the value of the experience: “There’s no better way to learn than to teach. It’s inspiring to watch our students grow in confidence and curiosity.”

While primarily educational, OT Summer Discovery Day also showcases the spirit and strengths of Duke OTD. The 2025–2026 admissions cycle opens July 18. Visit the Apply to Duke OTD page for upcoming events and deadlines.
