Duke PA Students Visit Burton Elementary

Duke PA Students work with students from Burton ElementaryFor 20 years, students from the Duke Physician Assistant Program have visited Burton Elementary School in Durham for an annual health education presentation.

Students Ruth Laughon, Elli Flora, Kayla Rowan and Sophia Hasham organized the event this year. Nearly half the class of 2023 visited 4th graders at the school for an educational afternoon focusing on nutrition, physical activity, mindfulness, inclusivity and bullying awareness.

The PA students led the 4th graders in exercises, made healthy dip, talked about bullying, practiced handwashing, and taught self-care skills. They also collected almost $300 to buy books for the classroom.

Faculty advisor Marty Nelson, MHS, PA-C says, “The teachers said that they are still talking about it and begging them to come back before the year ends!”

Previous years have focused on topics such as dental health and “A Journey Through the Human Body.”
