Duke PA Program Celebrates 59th Graduating Class

The Duke Physician Assistant Program celebrated the graduation of its 59th class during a commencement ceremony on August 7 honoring 89 new physician assistants.

The Class of 2026 distinguished itself through academic achievement, leadership, and community service. In remarks during the ceremony, class president Kristy Lieu reflected on the cohort's impact beyond the classroom, noting that students volunteered extensively in the community, supported families affected by Hurricane Helene, participated in health screenings and advocacy efforts, and raised a program-record $14,448 for charitable causes.

"There is a reason why we are the #1 PA program," Lieu said. "It isn't about the ranking, but the students that make us the best."

Several graduates, faculty, and community partners were recognized with awards during the ceremony:

  • Richard J. Scheele Award: Alexander (Tram) Whitehurst
  • Joyce C. Nichols Award: Maguette Seye
  • Buddy Lee Treadwell Award: Nicole Lane, MHS, PA-C
  • Duke PA Partnership Award: Richard Benson, MD, FACEP
  • Duke PA Partnership Award: Yasmin Marcantonio, MD, MPH, FACP, FAAP

Addressing the graduates, Duke PA Program Director April Stouder, PA, MHS, EdD, praised the class for its service and leadership.

"This talented cohort accrued thousands of community service hours, raised PA Program record-breaking dollar amounts for deserving causes, and represented our program excellently through their leadership, scholarship, passion, and care for others," Stouder said.

She encouraged graduates to embrace the opportunities ahead while remaining connected to the profession and the program.

"We hope that you will forever be proud to be a Duke PA and that you know how excited we are to call you our newest PA colleagues," she said.

With commencement complete, the Class of 2026 joins a growing network of Duke PA alumni serving patients and communities across the country.
