Duke Flags Lowered: Biochemist Irwin Fridovich Dies at Age 90
Biochemist Irwin Fridovich, the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of Medicine and a familiar figure on the Duke campus for more than 60 years, died Saturday at age 90.
Fridovich was internationally known for his work on the body's responses to "free radicals," dangerously corrosive oxygen molecules that would cause serious damage to tissues if left unchecked.
Long-time Friends Donald McDonnell and Chris Newgard Receive Endocrine Society’s 2020 Laureate Awards
Donald P. McDonnell, PhD, chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology, and Christopher B. Newgard, PhD, professor of Medicine and Pharmacology and Cancer Biology, have both received 2020 Laureate Awards from the Endocrine Society. These long-time colleagues, collaborators and friends both have primary appointments in the Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology.

Duke PhD Students Receive Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Basic Science Research
Four senior PhD students in the School of Medicine were awarded the second annual Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence (CARE) for outstanding accomplishments in basic science research. Ted Espenschied, Nandan Gokhale, Kevin Lin, and Ying Yin were recognized at a ceremony at the Washington Duke Inn, and also received an engraved plaque with a cash award of $1,500.
School of Medicine’s Inaugural Research Week Draws Hundreds
Hundreds of faculty, trainees, students, and staff attended the School of Medicine’s inaugural Research Week, held October 14-17, 2019. The week-long event included lectures, a poster session, Innovation Jam sponsored by the Duke Institute for Health Innovation, and a Town Hall hosted by the Office of Scientific Integrity.
Duke’s Radiology Residency Program Named Best in Country
The residency program in the Department of Radiology at Duke University School of Medicine has been named the Best Radiologist Training Program in the country as part of the 20th annual Minnies awards.
