Dr. Saumil Chudgar is the Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs at the Duke University School of Medicine, where he also serves as Professor of Medicine and practices as a hospitalist at Duke University Hospital. A dedicated educator and clinician, Dr. Chudgar has been a member of the Duke faculty since 2008, following the completion of his medical degree and Internal Medicine residency at Duke. He holds a Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of North Carolina - Wilmington and a Master of Science in Medical Education Leadership from the University of New England.

In his current role, Dr. Chudgar provides strategic leadership and oversight of the MD program’s curriculum. He supports the work of the Professors of the Practice and the Office of Curricular Affairs staff, ensuring the continued excellence and innovation of Duke’s medical education programs. Previously, he served as Assistant Dean for Clinical Education from 2021 to 2025, leading the clinical training of medical students across the medical school curriculum while collaborating closely with clerkship, elective, and interdisciplinary course directors to ensure a comprehensive and integrated clinical education experience.

Dr. Chudgar remains actively involved in teaching and curriculum development. He has directed the Clinical Skills Course since 2012 and is a small group leader in the Capstone course. Before beginning the Assistant Dean role in 2021, he served as Director of Undergraduate Medical Education in the Department of Medicine for the seven years, directing the internal medicine clerkship and leading medical student education and advising in the department.

Dr. Chudgar works clinically as a hospitalist and teaches medical students and residents in the care of inpatients at Duke University Hospital. His research interests include medical education innovations, curriculum development, effective teaching methods, and assessment of clinical skills. Dr. Chudgar’s contributions to medical education have been recognized with numerous honors including the Master Clinician/Teacher Award, the Golden Apple Teaching Award, the Practice Course Professionalism Award, and the Thomas Kinney Distinguished Teaching Award.
