Monte D. Brown, MD, has served as the Vice President of Administration and Secretary for Duke University Health System (DUHS) and Associate Dean of Veterans Affairs for the Duke University School of Medicine since 2006. 

Dr. Brown reports to the CEO of DUHS, and the Executive Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean of the Duke University School of Medicine. He plays a key role in guiding and implementing the health system strategic plan and coordination with the School of Medicine, School of Nursing as well as Duke University regarding Duke Health activities. He coordinates the DUHS Board of Director activity and has overall responsibility for maintaining Duke’s relationship with the VA in all three missions of patient care, research and education.  He also oversees all facility planning, design, maintenance and construction related activities for Duke Health; including Duke University Health System, Duke University School of Medicine and the Duke University School of Nursing as well Duke Occupational and Environmental Safety(OESO) and Duke University Medical Center Engineering and Operations. Dr. Brown earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1986 and completed training in internal medicine and cardiology at Stanford University in 1995. He spent six years in various roles on the Stanford faculty at the Palo Alto VAMC. He then spent two years as the associate chief medical officer at Stanford, where he helped develop a unique collaboration involving the county, the VA and Stanford to serve the local community, before moving to Harvard in 1997. He spent eight years on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, before coming to Duke.
