My name is Mar Martinez. I am originally from Valencia, Spain, where I earned my PhD in Molecular Biology. In 2011, I joined Duke University with a fellowship to pursue the postdoctoral research in the Pharmacology and Cancer Biology Department. Currently, I serve as the Senior Research Scientist in the Schmid Lab within the Biology Department.
Scientifically, my primary focus is unraveling the transcriptionally mechanisms that orchestrate the adaptation to changing environments in extremophilic organisms that normally colonize harsh environments. Outside the lab, I am the mom of 2 children who daily navigate between the two cultures: being born in the US from Hispanic parents. I am a proud member of the cultural committee and the leadership board of ¡DALHE! (Duke Advancing Latiné/Hispanic Excellence) with the goal of contributing to build strong bridges between cultures, enriching the potential of Hispanic heritage.
