Avery is from Atlanta, GA, and graduated from Florida State University Honors College with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. Avery did her shadowing and research with pediatric populations before attending Duke. Inspired to be an OT by her brother who has autism, Avery is specifically interested in working with children with developmental disabilities. Seeing what OT has done for her brother made Avery want to do that for others. She fell in love with the Duke OTD program after attending a Zoom information session and hearing Dr. Sarah Barton and Dr. Barbara Hooper speak about the program and its aspirations.
