The next event in the new Research Town Hall series will take place Nov 1. As part of this event, Dr. Larry Carin, Vice Provost for Research, will give an overview of opportunities and initiatives at Duke related to “big data” and data science, a landscape that has grown considerably at Duke in recent years. Come hear about what’s new!
After Dr. Carin's overview, I’ll moderate a faculty panel discussion on big data in practice. This panel will feature three faculty from the Nicholas School - Drs. Heather Stapleton, Joel Meyer, Richard Di Giulio - as well as Dr. Ed Levin (School of Medicine) and Dr. Mark Weisner (Pratt). Their discussion will cover how a grass-roots effort led to a robust research effort across Duke in environmental health, how they approach research quality, rigor and reproducibility in their individual laboratories and as collaborative groups, and how their experiences could apply to researchers in other fields, too. There will be time reserved for Q&A – and we’ll have cookies!
I'm excited about this discussion, since ensuring research and data quality is a vital aspect of conducting and overseeing research regardless of funding source or research field.
