The next event in a new presentation series on grants and research will take place May 29. As part of this event, I'll be moderating a faculty panel discussion on research quality -- what the NIH is referring to as "rigor and reproducibility". The discussion will cover how to convey approaches to rigor and reproducibility in grant applications and how to establish, maintain, and enhance a culture of research quality within and across a variety of research settings.
I'm excited about this discussion, since ensuring research quality is a vital aspect of conducting and overseeing research regardless of funding source or research field. The discussion also will be a nice complement to the journal Nature's recent special collection on "How to grow a healthy lab" (see the May 16 issue).

Targeted to faculty but open to all. The session will begin with an update from and Q&A with Tim Walsh, Vice President for Finance and Chair of the University’s research administration continuous improvement (RACI) initiative. This will be followed by a faculty panel discussion on demonstrating rigor and reproducibility in grant applications and enhancing and ensuring rigor and reproducibility in a variety of research settings, from individual labs to collaborative and multi-institutional teams. Confirmed panelists to date are Drs. Eun-Ok Im (School of Nursing); Ken Poss (School of Medicine); and Allen Song (School of Medicine). (Campus representative still in recruitment.)
