As the new academic year begins, the Office for Faculty would like to make you aware of two exciting updates to the School of Medicine Executive Coaching Program.
- In October of 2019, the program was pleased to announce the addition of a new internal coach, Dr. Jodi Hawes (see bio below). Jodi is well-known to many of you and is a welcome member to the coaching team. She will expand the program’s capacity and be a wonderful resource to faculty who wish to pursue coaching.
- In September of 2019, Dr. Sharon Hull, Director of the Executive Coaching Program, attained the prestigious credential of Professional Certified Coach through the International Coach Federation. We congratulate Sharon on achieving this milestone.
Since its inception in 2015, the DUSOM Executive Coaching Program has served hundreds of faculty across all School of Medicine departments who were looking for leadership skill development, career planning, enhanced institutional awareness, or greater work-life alignment.
Faculty can seek coaching individually for developmental reasons, or in some cases may be referred by a department chair or other leader to address a challenging situation. Executive coaches are also available to work with intact teams on interpersonal and team dynamics.

Sharon Hull, MD, MPH, PCC, is a Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health. She is both an experienced faculty member and leader, and an experienced coach to faculty. She has over 27 years of experience in academic medicine, as a clinician, educator, researcher and administrator. She has served as department chair in other institutions. In addition to her academic medicine credentials, she has completed formal training and certification as a professional coach. She is trained and certified in the administration of 360 assessments as well as other key psychological assessment instruments designed to support coaching services. Dr. Hull has eight years of experience working formally as a coach, and is particularly committed to helping academic scientists and clinicians develop successful and fulfilling careers. Dr. Hull is a member of the Forbes Coaches Council. She has attained the Professional Certified Coach credential through the International Coach Federation. At Duke, Dr. Hull also serves as the Senior Executive Coach for the Duke Health Clinical Leadership Program.
Jodi Hawes, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and a member of the Division of General and Community Neurology. Jodi completed the NC State University Business and Professional Coaching Certificate Program and is pursuing the Associate Certified Coach credential through the International Coach Federation (anticipated completion in 2020). She participated in the 2017 Duke Clinical Leadership Program and has been invited back as a team coach for every program since then.
Jodi is an experienced clinician, educator and clinical researcher. She serves in leadership as Vice Chair of Clinical Operations for the Department of Neurology. She worked as a physical therapist for 7 years before attending Albany Medical College. She completed her internship and residency at Duke. Following her fellowship in Neuro-rehabilitation at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, she returned to Duke as a faculty member. Jodi is committed to helping professionals reach their potential and attain fulfilling careers.
