Duke Surgery and Durham Nativity School Partner to Train Future Surgeons

Students from the Durham Nativity School recently participated in a unique, hands-on surgical skills workshop as part of a new educational outreach program from the Duke University Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine.

Seventh graders learned surgical skills under the direction of Duke surgeons Dr. Linda Cendales and Dr. Marcus Darrabie during a field trip to the operating rooms in the vivarium at Duke University on Wednesday, Sept 30, 2015. Thirteen students in Mary Anderson’s science class learned how to “gown and glove” in preparation for surgery. It was part of the ASSET (Academic Success through Surgical Education and Training) program at Duke. ASSET aims to foster high achievement in science through surgical education for financially disadvantaged students at the Nativity School.
