Thought leaders from across the nation converged today in Washington, DC, at the National Academy of Sciences for a roundtable discussion about Open Science. Duke University School of Medicine convened the group to address the idea of researchers and sponsoring entities sharing their data from early phase clinical research with the larger research community, patients, and the public at-large. Thirty-four participants (listed below) representing academic, industry, government, foundations and patient groups participated in a day-long discussion. While serious challenges related to implementing this concept were acknowledged, one guiding consensus principle emerged: open science and data sharing in early phase research are needed and should be used to do better science that ultimately can improve health.
