Many students have stepped up in the time of COVID-19 and have organized a home delivery service for food-insecure patients at the Duke Outpatient Clinic. Building on the success of the Fresh Produce Program at Duke Outpatient Clinic, these students have had to adapt to unique circumstances and have developed a home delivery model that brings fresh produce and shelf-stable goods to the homes of patients who need it most. The first delivery was this week, with 56 bags delivered to patients, totaling over one thousand pounds of food distributed! In addition to the food, a recipe and information on local food pantries was included with each bag. Deliveries will continue weekly until stay at home orders are lifted. There have been numerous other medical students who have stepped up to volunteer to deliver the bags of food, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to support this effort. These kinds of efforts from Duke medical students demonstrate the ingenuity and dedication to service that is an essential part of Duke School of Medicine's mission. Join me in celebrating these heroes and their impact on our broader Durham community!
