What is the CAMP experience?
CAMP is a course offered in the second year of the Occupational Therapy Doctorate program at Duke University.
In this course, community volunteers are matched with a small group of graduate occupational therapy (OT) students guided by a licensed occupational therapist. Students get to practice assessing and collaboratively working with you to identify meaningful goals and ways to make daily life easier.
Who is a good fit to be a CAMP community volunteer?
CAMP volunteers are people 18 years or older facing challenges in daily life or barriers to participation in meaningful activities. This could be due to:
- New or chronic health condition(s)
- Aging-related changes
- Life role transitions, such as caregiving, parenting, retirement, etc.
What can I expect if I participate in CAMP?
Your CAMP team will include a licensed occupational therapist (mentor), three or four students, and you, the community volunteer (client). The occupational therapist, who serves as a mentor, guides students in evaluating and exploring solutions with the clients to allow for safe and satisfying participation in daily activities and meaningful roles. You’ll also get a customized home occupational program.
Note: While we hope you gain valuable knowledge and strategies to enhance your daily life, this is primarily a student learning experience and not formal skilled occupational therapy services.
What is the time commitment?
You will be scheduled for a one-hour session with your CAMP Team each Tuesday from February 4 through February 25 and March 18 through April 8 (eight total sessions).
Your weekly session time will be 10–11 a.m. or 2–3 p.m., depending on your availability.
Where is CAMP held?
CAMP is held at the Duke OTD's Erwin Square Plaza space at 2200 West Main Street, Durham, NC 27705. We will provide further instructions regarding directions and parking.
