Purpose:
The purpose of this document is to outline the steps for rescinding someone from the BOOST Program and updating all relevant documents and records. When BOOST rescinds an invitation to participate in the program, we mean to communicate that Scholars with “rescinded” status are no longer eligible to participate for the remainder of the program year. In other words, rescinded Scholars are not invited to attend events past the point of rescission so that resources such as time, mentorship, and event expenses can be redirected to Scholars who are able to attend more regularly.
Why “rescission”?
The admin team spent considerable time and energy coming up with a term that felt as gentle as possible and reflects our values. Terms like “separated” and “removed” can be loaded and activating, especially for people who come from the communities we serve. The term “rescind” denotes that we are revoking an invitation to be part of the program.
Why might someone be rescinded?
- Attendance. If a Scholar or staff person demonstrates repeated absences without notice from themselves or their guardian(s), Coaches and Admin Staff will talk with them and their family to ask whether BOOST is right for them in the current year. If there is no response, or if it is collaboratively determined by staff and family that now is not the best time, BOOST will rescind that person’s status in the program.
- Violation of community code of conduct. BOOST shares and reinforces its community code of conduct throughout the year. If it is determined that a member of the BOOST community has violated these agreements, they may be asked to discontinue their participation.
What steps are taken to prevent rescissions?
Our team goes to great lengths to ensure that Scholars and staff have everything they need to participate fully in our program. When a member of our community does not show up for events, we:
- For all:
- Talk with Scholars, families, and staff to ensure receipt of the schedule and intent to participate.
- For Scholars:
- Check Coach contact logs to investigate whether the Scholar’s immediate support team (Coach and Junior staffers) has communicated regularly with the Scholar and their family.
- Check MailChimp records and other communications platforms to ensure that the Scholar and family or staff member and guardian(s) have been receiving BOOST event reminders.
- For Staff:
- Discuss obstacles to fulfilling their commitment and intervene where possible.
