The School of Medicine Office for Faculty recently announced that Teoma LaShawn, PT, DPT, MDiv, has been selected as a 2025 ADVANCE-UP Scholar. She recently began the Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Faculty Development Residency program. This honor recognizes Dr. LaShawn's exceptional physical therapy contributions and dedication to fostering academic diversity and inclusion.
The ADVANCE-UP (Academic Development, Advocacy Networking, Coaching, and Education for Underrepresented Populations) program is a year-long initiative supporting faculty from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds in academic medical centers. The program provides academic development, mentoring, and networking opportunities to help participants navigate challenges and thrive in their careers. The goal is to create a network of scholars who advocate for diversity, enhance leadership representation, and strengthen community ties among underrepresented faculty.
Dr. LaShawn has long been committed to advancing physical therapy and addressing health disparities. In addition to her role at Duke, she is an ordained Baptist minister passionate about community engagement and health promotion, especially regarding reducing health inequities. Dr. LaShawn’s leadership extends to mentoring students and advocating for increased diversity in physical therapy education and leadership.
As an ADVANCE-UP Scholar, Dr. LaShawn will receive personalized mentoring, professional coaching, and opportunities to engage with academic leaders. This support will further enhance her ability to advocate for underrepresented groups and create lasting change in physical therapy and the educational environment.
The School of Medicine Office for Faculty is proud to support Dr. LaShawn and the 2025 cohort of ADVANCE-UP Scholars as they work to make a broader impact on healthcare and academia.
Congratulations!
