Summer Discovery Program Participants Grow and Learn

From connecting with potential mentors to learning more about specialty areas, Summer Discovery Program participants covered plenty of fun and worthwhile Duke University ground. The seventh annual Summer Discovery Program wrapped up on Friday, June 16.

Led by Tiffany Adams, PT, DPT, MBA, PhD, SDP is a comprehensive initiative that exposes underrepresented students to the PT profession and the Duke DPT program. Special thanks to DPT students Razan Fayad, Arienne Sauvignon Howard, Jessika Barnes, Donny Lamotte, and the faculty and staff who helped make the week a special experience for all.

Participants reflected on their experiences before leaving campus. “Everything was very informative. The people you brought in to tell us about the different areas of PT were great,” said BreAnna Padilla, who is a freshman in exercise science at Winston-Salem State University.

The connections participants made with each other and potential mentors sparked their curiosity and helped them build confidence.

“Usually, I have a hard time connecting with people, but I feel like we all connected really well and super-fast. I am so glad that we are all friends now,” said Zariah Scales, a junior majoring in exercise science at the University of Virginia's College at Wise.

Arieonne Lewis, a senior in health science at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, said the week reignited her love for learning. “It brought my drive back to ask many questions and even try new things more often,” said Lewis.
