When thinking seriously about occupational therapy schools, I knew I wanted to go to a program out of state. I lived in Seattle for 15 years and felt I needed a change.
It was the best choice! I have gained many transformative experiences that led to personal growth in the past year. I am confident in my abilities as a mature adult to handle errands and even purchase home insurance. Freedom has been abundant compared to living with my parents, and I can feel the shift in my mental health.
I am also an avid traveler, so moving was more manageable for me in that way. Even if you are not, moving out of state for school is the best place to start!
Tips
As for moving logistics, I advise making it personable and looking at what works for you. Many people in my cohort drove themselves and their lives to Durham, but I shipped everything because I knew it would be less stressful for me. However, a road trip is always fun, so there is no right or wrong answer.
Don’t overpack because you will probably end up acquiring a lot of things here. Three years may seem long, but it isn’t, and you won’t want to pack all of it up again and again (at least I know I don’t). Plan, apartment search early, and live with roommates in the cohort!
Pro Tip: Once you’re settled in, make sure to explore outside the Duke OTD community. There are so many events around other parts of campus and the rest of Durham that are fun to take your mind off of school and to help you meet new people.
Remember, embracing the process and making the most of it is important. One of the greatest things I have taken away from this move and attending Duke OTD is the friends I have made. These relationships would never have happened if I had stayed home. You will make friends for life here! I genuinely believe that your hometown and your childhood friends will always be there to welcome you, but having friends in new places to welcome you is comforting, too.
Good luck with your new adventures!
