I write to inform you that Scott Gibson, Executive Vice Dean for Administration for the School of Medicine, has decided to retire from Duke effective July 31, 2025.

Scott has been an integral part of the Duke University School of Medicine for almost 25 years. His expertise and dedication have significantly contributed to our success and growth.

Scott joined Duke in 2000 as the school’s associate dean for finance and resource planning. He transitioned into his role as executive dean for administration when Nancy Andrews, MD, PhD, became dean in 2008.  He has been a key member of my senior staff since I became Dean in 2017. His leadership has been instrumental in streamlining administrative processes across Duke Health and directing our central administrative functions in finance, human resources, research administration and facilities planning. He deeply values his interactions with Duke’s tremendous faculty and staff, and he enjoys teaching a class on the School’s finances to multiple groups throughout the year.

As a key representative for the School of Medicine, Scott was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Duke Health Integrated Practice (DHIP), which brought our clinical departments into closer alignment with Duke University Health System.

We will conduct a national search for Scott’s successor, and we have engaged the executive search firm Witt Kieffer to lead this recruitment. Scott and I agreed to announce his retirement well in advance so that we can more effectively plan for the transition.  We both see this as an opportunity to evaluate new organizational models in the Dean’s Office designed to work more closely with the integrated practice.

When you see him in the hallway, please join me in thanking Scott for his service to the School and University.
