March is Developmental Disability Awareness Month

March is Developmental Disability Awareness Month (DDAM). Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions related to the impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. This year’s DDAM theme is “A World of Opportunities”, which was selected to bring awareness to the barriers people with developmental disabilities face in our communities.

During this month we strive to celebrate the contributions from our community members with developmental disabilities and continue to advocate for equal opportunities for these individuals to live full lives, achieve their goals, and be active community members.

Here are a few ways to get involved this month –

  • World Down Syndrome Day at Gigi’s Playhouse in Cary, NC: Gigi’s Playhouse is hosting a program on World Down Syndrome Day (March 21st) from 12-2 pm and has asked for our help! If you want to participate, RSVP here and indicate if you require transportation.

  • Additional Volunteer Opportunities at Gigi’s Playhouse: If you are not available on World Down Syndrome Day, there are plenty of more opportunities to volunteer. Feel free to pick up a shift that works for your own schedule

  • Wear Orange! Orange is the official color of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and is a symbol of energy and positivity.
