After more than a decade of exemplary service, Ann Reed, MD, will be stepping down as chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the end of 2025. Dr. Reed's leadership has been instrumental in propelling our pediatrics department to new heights, and her contributions will have a lasting impact on our Duke community.
Dr. Reed, the Samuel L. Katz Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, has dedicated her career to caring for children with autoimmune disorders and immune dysfunction. Her research, which has spanned over 20 years, focuses on the genetics and causes of human autoimmune diseases, particularly juvenile dermatomyositis.
Dr. Reed has spearheaded numerous initiatives that have significantly advanced our missions. Under her leadership, the Department of Pediatrics has climbed the Blue Ridge rankings for most NIH-funded research, consistently securing the No. 1 or No. 2 spot since 2017, signifying the important research being conducted by the program. She also led the creation of the Child Health Discovery Initiative which fosters multidisciplinary research to improve childhood and lifelong health. Additionally, the opening of the Duke Health Center Creekstone for multispecialty pediatric care in 2021 has significantly expanded access to critical Duke pediatric services, reflecting Dr. Reed's visionary leadership and commitment to improving child health. Dr. Reed has also been a champion for the recent launch of North Carolina Children's, a partnership with UNC Health to develop the state's first standalone children's hospital.
Moira Rynn, MD, chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, will lead a committee through a national search to identify Dr. Reed’s successor.
Please join us in expressing our deepest gratitude to Dr. Reed for her outstanding service in this role.
Sincerely,
