The Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program proudly hosted its 2025 Summer Discovery Program (SDP) from June 9 to 13, welcoming 20 undergraduate students from across the country for an immersive week of exploration, mentorship, and hands-on learning.

Designed to introduce students to the dynamic field of physical therapy, the SDP offers a unique opportunity to engage with one of the nation’s top Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs.
Over the week, participants were fully immersed in the profession, gaining exposure to a wide range of specialties, learning from leading faculty, and receiving mentorship from current Duke DPT students, clinicians, and admissions experts.
The program’s structured curriculum provided participants with:
- Insight into physical therapy career paths and specialties
- Exposure to Duke DPT course content and learning environments
- Meaningful connections with students, faculty, alumni, and staff
- Guidance on the DPT application and matriculation process
- Ongoing mentorship beyond the program week

Highlights of the week included a tour of Cameron Indoor Stadium, a climb to the top of Duke Chapel, and a deep dive into research opportunities at the Duke Mike Krzyzewski Human Performance Lab. Students also participated in networking and interview workshops, exploring what it’s like to be in graduate school and eventually practice as a physical therapist.
One participant reflected, “To relate to and be encouraged by so many people with similar passions but on different walks of life was an invaluable experience. Whether I was speaking with faculty, students, or other participants, I consistently felt at ease. SDP felt like a very safe space.”
The success of the 2025 program is a testament to the dedication of the organizing team, including Dr. Tiffany Adams, PT, PhD, MBA; Dr. Rosie Canizares, PT, PhD; Patrick Lester; Paige Vinson; and a team of passionate current DPT students.
As the week came to an end, participants departed with a deeper understanding of the profession, a stronger sense of community, and the tools to become more competitive applicants for DPT programs nationwide.
