Impacting the Future of Clinical Education

An American Council of Academic Physical Therapy task force on Clinical Education Placement Capacity and Process Innovation, chaired by Jamie Greco, PT, DPT, EdD, recently completed its work.

The task force's purpose was to collect data on the current and future supply and demand for clinical education, determine what challenges are affecting placements, and recommend enhancements and ways to streamline the administrative process around educational opportunities in the future.

The task force generated a final report containing 10 evidence-based recommendations related to the future of clinical education.

"The recommendations were based on what we read in the existing literature about the placement processes in other health professions, as well as what we heard from physical therapist clinicians who have a primary role in placing students for clinical education experiences," Dr. Greco said.

"I hope the recommendations will inspire the physical therapy clinical education community to transform how we currently place students for clinical experiences to maximize and perhaps even increase our capacity for clinical placements. Furthermore, I hope our work encourages others to reimagine some aspects of the clinical education curriculum itself and to discover ways to elevate the position of the clinician-educator."
