Exploring Female Athlete Health with Olympian and Duke Alumna Shannon Rowbury
In the spirit of the Olympic Games, Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy welcomed Olympic medalist and Duke alum Shannon Rowbury for an inspiring conversation centered around her new book, Strong as a Mother. Moderated by Duke DPT alum and faculty member Dr. Laura Pietrosimone, the event created a thoughtful forum for discussing female athlete health and well‑being across the lifespan.
Rowbury shared insights from her experiences competing on the world stage as a professional middle‑distance runner, as well as her advocacy work advancing equal rights and better support for female athletes. The discussion emphasized the importance of evidence‑based, accessible resources during the pregnancy and postpartum journey, and the role movement can play in building joy, resilience, and lasting community.
Participants also heard perspectives from Dr. Kenzie Johnston, Duke Primary Care Sports Medicine physician and Team Physician for Duke Athletics, and Dr. Shefali Christopher, Duke DPT alum and faculty member at Tufts University. Their contributions highlighted critical metrics for promoting healthy development in youth and collegiate athletes, as well as the challenges and opportunities involved in translating emerging evidence into clinical practice.
Together, the speakers explored the motivation behind Strong as a Mother and the broader need for supportive, informed approaches to female athlete health. The conversation encouraged attendees to consider actionable strategies for promoting both physical and mental well‑being for individuals at every stage of life and athletic participation.
Duke DPT extends sincere appreciation to the event sponsors: Duke DPT Division, APTA North Carolina, Bull City Running Company, Endurance Collective, Duke Gothic Bookstore, and the Duke Female Athlete Program.
