Duke OTD Faculty Present at International Low Vision Conference

Duke OTD’s Tomeico Faison OTD, OTR/L and Kimberly Hreha, EdD, OTR/L joined colleagues from Duke Eye Center’s Vision Rehabilitation and Performance Division at the International Society of Low Vision Research and Rehabilitation (ISLRR) Conference in Denver, Colorado, held July 24-27. 

The presentations highlighted Duke’s growing leadership in vision rehabilitation through its inter-professional collaboration between optometrists and occupational therapists and its new entry-level vision rehabilitation certificate for OTD students.

  • Diane Whitaker, DO, presented Shifting the Paradigm: OT 1st Service Model to Meet the Unique Needs of the Aging Population with Vision Loss, which was co-authored by: Omar Mohiuddin, MPH, MS, OTR/L, Fay Tripp, CDRS, MS, OTR/L, Madison Dunning, OD, and Dr. Hreha.
  • Dr. Hreha and Dr. Faison presented a poster on: “Creating a Low Vision Certificate Program for Duke’s OTD students, which launched in spring 2023 with seven students. The goal is to broaden the program to expand access to these essential services through certified OTs. 
  • Dr. Hreha, Dr. Whitaker, Omar Mohiuddin, MPH, MS, OTR/L, and Madison Dunning, OD, presented “OT 1st Service Delivery Model for Age-related Macular Degeneration: A Quality Improvement Project, which was co-authored was Tripp.
  • Dr. Hreha also presented a poster on “Duke Eye Stroke Clinic,” Findings from an Innovative, Interdisciplinary Outpatient Program, which Brian Mac Grory, MB, BCh BAO, MHSc, MRCP, FAHA, FANA, and Chantal Boisvert, MD, OD co-authored.
