Duke DPT Class of 2024 Graduation Awards – Nominations Due March 11

It is hard to believe that the Class of 2024’s Graduation is just a few months away! We are now accepting the 2024 Duke DPT Graduation Award nominations.

The awards being given this year are the Robert Bartlett Student Recognition Award for Service and Leadership Excellence, the Jan Gwyer Student Recognition Award for Academic, Clinical, and Scholarly Excellence, the Duke DPT Inclusive Excellence Award, and the Helen Kaiser Alumni Award. 

Nominations for each award differ slightly and are described below. Please review these carefully and consider nominating one or more of your classmates. Nominations for each award are due by Monday, March 11, 2024, by 11:59 p.m. 

The Robert Bartlett Student Recognition Award for Service and Leadership Excellence 

This DPT Student Recognition Award is given to a third-year Duke DPT student who has demonstrated exceptional performance in leadership and service to the physical therapy profession, to Duke University, Duke University School of Medicine, and/or Duke DPT Division, to your Duke DPT Class, and/or service to the local and global community. A monetary award ($2,000) and plaque are presented at graduation. Students may nominate themselves, be nominated by their classmates, faculty, clinical instructor, or someone who can speak to their contributions and student’s CV. Nominations MUST be supported by a 1-2-page letter of reference addressing the students’ leadership and service contributions. Nominations should be emailed directly to Kaitlin Hicks by Monday, March 11, 2024, by 11:59 p.m. The nominated students will be informed of their nomination (not the name of the person nominating). They can provide additional information to the committee if they wish to do so (e.g., CV, bulleted list of contributions, etc.). 

The Jan Gwyer Student Recognition Award for Academic, Clinical, and Scholarly Excellence 

This DPT Student Recognition Award is given to a third-year Duke DPT student who has demonstrated exceptional academic and clinical performance and scholarship and research contributions. A monetary award ($2,000) and plaque are presented at graduation. Students may nominate themselves, be nominated by their classmates, clinical instructor, faculty, or by an individual who can speak to their contributions. Nominations MUST be supported by a 1-2-page letter of reference addressing the students’ academic and clinical performance, scholarship and research contributions and student’s CV. Nominations should be emailed directly to Kaitlin Hicks by Monday, March 11, 2024 by 11:59 p.m. The nominated students will be informed of their nomination (not name of person nominating) and have the opportunity to provide additional information to the committee if they wish to do so (e.g., CV, bulleted list of contributions, etc.). 

The Duke DPT Inclusive Excellence Award 

The Duke DPT Inclusive Excellence Award is given to a third-year Duke DPT student who has provided critical voice and sustained action to help transform Duke DPT Division/Duke School of Medicine and/or clinical environment (e.g., STEPS, TCEs, research setting, etc.) by making it an even more diverse, equitable and inclusive environment and/or to help transform professional organizations in physical therapy (e.g., APTA NC, APTA, etc.) and/or the local or global community by working collaboratively with others to encourage positive health outcomes for its diverse stakeholders. A monetary award ($2,000) and plaque are presented at graduation. Students may nominate themselves, be nominated by their classmates, clinical instructor, faculty, or by an individual outside of Duke who can speak to their contributions. Nominations MUST be supported by a 1-2-page letter of reference addressing the students excellence, innovation, and leadership in helping to create a more diverse and inclusive environment and the student’s CV. Nominations should be emailed directly to Kaitlin Hicks by Monday, March 11, 2024, by 11:59 p.m. The nominated students will be informed of their nomination (not the name of the person nominating) and can provide additional information to the committee if they wish to do so (e.g., CV, bulleted list of contributions, etc.). 

Helen Kaiser Alumni Award 

This award is presented to a third-year Duke DPT student selected by the Duke PT Alumni Association. This award is given to recognize a student for their strong commitment to the profession of Physical Therapy and to encourage support of and participation in the APTA activities by sending a Duke PT Student to an APTA-sanctioned conference. Students may nominate themselves or another student for this award. The faculty or a Duke PT Alumnus may also make nominations. The award is given at graduation and includes reimbursement of up to $1,000.00 towards expenses to an APTA Annual Conference as well as a matched $1,000.00 in funds from the Duke DPT Division. The ability to be funded to attend in person will depend on Duke COVID-19 restrictions for travel. Information about this award (e.g., criteria for application, application form, etc.) will be e-mailed soon to you by Duke DPT Coordinator of Alumni Engagement, Dr. Rosie Canizares. Nominations for the Helen Kasier Award will be submitted via Qualtrics. As part of the nomination, you will be asked to submit the following information about the nominee: preferred contact, educational background, activities in the areas of professional, service, and research. You will also have to confirm that the nominee has read the criteria for the award, and you will have the opportunity to upload the nominee’s resume/CV as well as a letter of support.
